Singapore November 2001

Sun Sun Hotel

The Sun Sun Hotel was billed as clean and central by Lonely Planet. It is. Singles w/o aircon go for S$35. I looked at a couple of other places but I couldn't find a better value. Rooms are large, bare and simple. The staff are friendly. They say they are closing down for renovations in March 2002.

Close by are: The MRT subway system, bus to the airport (#36 - $1.50), Serangoon Road (Little India), Sim Lim square (electronics mecca), and the Boogis Junction area. A 24 hour internet cafe and cheap eats are within a five minute walk. A useful travel book store on Prinsep by Bras Basah, and the highly recommend Airpower Travel agency on 131 Bencoolen Street are nearby.

Good Eats Nearby

Good cheap eats are everywhere in Singapore -- follow the crowds and don't be shy -- everyone likes another customer. There are several restaurants on the same block as the Sun Sun, including a Soy Milk and Soy Custard stand that people come from all over Singapore to enjoy.
One block North on Selegie is Sri Vijaya Vegetarian Restaurant, providing Indian style snacks, sweets, and thali meals.
Sri Vijaya is special because eating here provides an authentic South Indian eating experience... save yourself an airfare to India! Service is better if you speak Tamil, order a "Thali" if you want a complete meal.

Good Eats Outside

One block east, down Middle Road, at 127 Bencoolen Street is Noorul Ameen Restaurant, a 24 hour Roti Prata stand, right next door is a vegetarian Chinese place, and across the street in Fortune Plaza is a food court with fruit and fruit juice stands. Airpower Travel is above the vegie Chinese place, as is "Peony Mansions" a backpacker total budget lodging.

Good Eats Inside

Kopitiam food courts provide a good, reasonably priced alternative, to traditional Singapore charm. They all look similar inside, and they provide all the flavors of Singapore, but with shopping mall charm instead. They are spic and span, air conditioned, and the one at Bencoolen and Bras Basah Street is open 24 hours.

Getting Connected

Peace Plaza, across the street from Sun Sun Hotel has 8 cents a minute internet. There is a 24 hour internet place at the Rendezvous Hotel at Selegie and Bras Basah Road, it is $2/half hour, but can be noisy.
Sun Sun Hotel has a phone you can connect a PC to. You can use credit cards, and, or the "Freedom Card" phone card that you can get at a post office if you are lucky. It is also known as "the chip card" because it has a little gold chip on it. I bought a Freedom Card at the Killiney Road Post Office after insisting that they are stocked in the back... they come in $3, $5 and $10 increments.

Some Singapore Sights...

Serangoon Road (above), during Deepavali will teach the pierced and tattoed crowd a lesson; find the authentic thing here. Only in Singapore can you find Curry Fish Head at Hyde Park Cafe (right). See beautiful pond plants at the Singapore Botanical Garden (far right).
